Promoted Burnley stole the show on Wednesday evening beating mighty Manchester United at home in the Premier League.

“The Gang of Four” make the tennis year one of the best ever

This year’s tennis season can be one of the most exciting in a long time. “The Gang of Four” with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will clash in Melbourne the next couple of weeks. What can we expect? We talked with one of the world’s leading odds compilers in tennis, Stefan Widén at Expekt.com, to get a view.

Roger Federer’s total dominance as nr 1 in tennis was halted by Rafael Nadal last year, and this year Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic steps up the challenge.

The first of four Grand Slams, the Australian Open, starts on Monday and Stefan Widén at Expekt.com believes in a couple of hot weeks in Melbourne and a thrilling year in full.

- It is a rarity that we see four such high-class payers at the same time and that will provide us with excellent tennis through out the year, says Stefan Widén, by many viewed as the leading tennis-bookmaker in the world.

First out is Australian Open. What speaks for and against Roger Federer to win?

- Federer has won three of the last five tournaments in Australian Open and likes both the surface and the balls. Nadal is a slow-starter and in his weakest period of the season right now, and Federer beat Murray in the latest Grand Slam final, which is an advantage if they should meet again in a semi or a final.

- Against Federer is that he has not won the tight matches for a year or so. Earlier that was his strength. Also, Federer has a rather weak head to head record against Nadal, six wins and twelve losses, and against Murray, two wins and five losses. But Federer is my favorite to clinch the title together with Murray.

What speaks for and against Rafael Nadal to win?

- Nadal is mentally the strongest player around and no opponent are looking forward to a five-set match against him. Nadal has also a good record against the other in the Gang of Four with 12-6 against Federer, 5-1 against Murray and 10-4 against Djokovic.

- But Nadal has seldom played really well at the start of the year and his best result up to date at the Australian Open is a semi-final. The reason for this is mostly that Nadal gets problem with his knees on the hard-court. If he is not hundred percent physically fit he will not win the title.

- Nadal is my personal favorite player so I hope that he reaches his peak and wins the first Grand Slam of the year, but objectively viewed he is my third ranked favorite to clinch the title in Melbourne.

What speaks for and against Andy Murray to win?

- Andy Murray is the most interesting player around at the moment, a part of me can even see him being a world-dominator this year. That is how massive his potential and ability and is. Murray is the current nr 1 on hard-court and proved that when he won in Doha where Federer and Nadal also took part. Murray plays a very clever tennis, a bit like Miroslav Mecir in those days.

- There are two things that speak against Murray in Melbourne. The biggest threat is his mentally strength. Does he have what it takes to win his first Grand Slam? Secondly, it is about his physique. He has a great fitness nowadays but his back can cause him problems. I fear that his fragile back can be a threat in long and tight matches.

What speaks for and against Novak Djokovic to win?

- Djokovic is the defending champion after defeating Tsonga in last years final. Djokovic is hard to predict sometimes, regarding form and motivation etc. In my opinion, he is a great player and when he peaks, he is almost unbeatable on hard-court.

- Djokovic struggles to cope with the pressure on him and officially talks a lot more about that than Federer, Nadal and Murray. But what is good for him now, after the loss in the first round in Brisbane and the fact that Murray plays perfect tennis, is that he is not under that much pressure. I think he prefers that. If Djokovic finds the confidence he had last year in Melbourne, he can win it again.

Do you have any good outsiders to look out for?

- I hold Juan Martin Del Potro very high. When he is hundred per cent fit physically, he is very hard to beat.

- Gael Monfils and J-W Tsonga are two players with great movement and are therefore hard to break down in rallies. Both will go a long way in Melbourne with a good draw.

- Fernando Verdasco and Radek Stepanek played very well in Brisbane, where Stepanek beat the same Verdasco in the final.

- Marin Cilic is in top-form and plays really good tennis. He can be a threat to whoever he meets.

What is your view on the year in total, Stefan – who will dominate in the big tournaments?

- The tennis world can look forward to one of the best years ever. Most focus will be on “The top Four”. It is a rarity that we see four such high-class payers at the same time and that will provide us with excellent tennis through out the year.

Do you foresee any young, interesting players that can cause an up-set?

- For the wider public that mostly follows the big guns, Juan Martin Del Potro is a player to watch. He is a 20 year old Argentine, and with massive potential.
